I like to go there a lot, a few times a week during work. It helps me to de-stress since it is very relaxing and I like the different soups they have every day. Also I am a part-time student, so I get some homework done there or read through their books. Is it wrong to read the books there if I dont buy them? Would the employees get mad? I do sometimes buy things and always buy lunch there. I feel if they put out chairs and couches its because they are okay with you sitting there and browsing through books. What do you think?
No. As long as you clean up, don’t stain the books and put them back where you find them, there’s no problem with that. I do it on weekends.

I think if they didn’t want you to then they wouldn’t make it so inviting. I do it on occassion. If you go alot, then it looks like they would have already asked you to stop if they minded.

It’s fine. Just don’t get soup on the books
Seriously, you don’t have to feel bad, esp since you’re spending tons of money on food there. Bookstores realize that the costumers will oftentimes read without buying.

Believe it or not, you’re doing exactly what the shop wants you to do. B&N sets it up that way.
Sure, if someone wants/needs a book they go in the store. The comfortable atmosphere might entice them to buy something additional, such as a coffee drink, and maybe a cookie or brownie to go with it. Oh look! Bookmarks right by the checkout – hmm, might need one.
The Starbucks inside is not an independent franchise, but actually owned by the store, so either way if you buy some coffee you’re bringing revenue in.
B&N knows this, so even if someone just wants to read or do homework while at the cafe, they still make money if you don’t buy a book. Then if you come often, they’ve cultivated customer loyalty and if the employees do their jobs right, they recognize you and thus the company has built relationship with you.
So they get money from the books themselves, but also from customers who don’t buy books. That’s why they design it that way – to maximize revenue. And utilizing customer loyalty and relationship, they’ve ensured future revenue.
In time, say around the holidays, you may go in you might think – hey I can do my holiday shopping here! So the employees can suggest items for your family and friends, you can get your pumpkin spice latte or peppermint Frappucino, you have fun shopping and it’s win-win for everyone.

That’s not being wrong, that being constructive with your lunch time, downloading stress, and checking out your future purchases all at once. Due to the lack of Public Libraries in accessible places, B & N offers a great alterative with very comfortable setting arrangements. Keep doing what you’re doing, you not hurting a thing!

They don’t mind, that’s why they put them out. You’re not the only one that does this. However, don’t make a huge pile of books that they have to reshelf. That one is kinda rude.
happy relaxing!!
