  • Does it usually cost anything to hang photography in cafes?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under cafes | 5 Comments »

I am a photographer and i’m kinda at a loss on how to sell my photography and the only i could think of was to sell it in local cafes. So i was wondering how that worked.

    Depends entirely on the venue.
Some will allow it for nothing
some will want a percentage of any sales
    some will rent the space
some will rent the space plus a percentage of sales.

    Try asking them.

You would have to find out from the specific cafe. I have one near me that sells art for free, they like the fact that artists hang their work there, and love the art that they get to display for free, and then when it sells they notify the artist and give them their money.

It would be nice to offer them a % of the price. Many smaller art galleries ask 20 to 35% of the sale price. If they ask for more, well, it’s your call, but if they be busy and sell a lot, it’s good fast $$.

Take some ready to hang work that compliments their style and decor and ask them if they would like to do such. If they don’t have a %, offer 25% and see what happens. Offer to come by once a week and replace any that may sell and in a couple months, change some out to new stuff. Have business cards by each photo or in one location as well.

Different folks use different strokes. Some are free and some ask for a %.
If they offer free space, ask for a little insurance and be willing to reciprocate by offering a ‘finder’s fee’.
If over 35% commission is the deal, they better be a hot spot. (some also add 3% for credit card purchases).
      Good luck.

talk to the owner of the cafe, and have a portfolio of your work available…..if he thinks its suitable, and thinks it will sell, then make up an agreement that he will get a certain % when the photo sells.

The guy has a business to run…he’s not going to waste his time with garbage, so you better be good.
